{Dolls Quilt Swap 2012} Sent and Received

I once again participated in a Dolls Quilt Swap (DQS) with some quilting friends this year. My fourth year I think now, and I love the challenge of coming up with something interesting, colourful, to the taste and requests of the recipient.

This year I was making for AJ, who requested a wall hanging. So my mind wandered through AJ's blog, checked out what she had received in past years and also spent quite a bit of time on pinterest for some inspiration!

I made AJ a small rectangle size dolls quilt with scrappy houses, a rolling hill, dark skies with the sun poking through and some pretty rain drop quilting with a combination of variegated and metallic threads which sparkle in the light.

I received this year from Rachel, who made a little dolls quilt for Miss 4 - which quickly found a new home on her bed keeping a selection of her dolls all snuggled up for bedtime.

{how to . . .} make a storage/cutting table combo

After posting a photo of my new storage/cutting table combo on my facebook page a few days ago, I've had quite a few requests for info on how to make/what it cost? So here it is!

Your shopping list!
(you'll need to go to Ikea and Bunnings)

Ikea - 2 x Expedit Shelving Units
$119.00 each
 Ikea - 1 x Vika Amon Table Top (150cm x 75cm - perfect fit!)
$59.00 each
Bunnings - Length of Structural Pine - MGP10
70x45mm 2.4 length (and ask the lovely sales person to cut it into 3 x 750mm (75cm) lengths)
$7.39 for the 2.4m length

Bunnings - Double Sided Tape (any will do). I used an outdoor strength one by Norton.
$8.56 roll

How to make!
Assemble your two expedit units and place them in your desired location on their sides, and side by side to each other to create your rectangle bench.

Lay your table top with the wrong side facing up and place your 3 lengths of pine cut to fit just in from each end and in the middle and mark with a pencil where they are.

Cut your lengths of double sided tape to fit the length of each piece of pine and attached to one side (the 45mm width side of the timber). Stick these down on your marked areas of the wrong side of the table top.

**NOTE: If you are a s shorter person, you may find the finished height of this table too high, so you could put your tape on the 70mm width side of the pine lengths to bring the finished height down 2.5cm.

Cut 3 more length of the double sided tape to fit the pine and place them on the side of pine that will rest on the expedit unit tops. Remove the backing and with the help of a friend, flip the top over and position correctly on top of the expedit units to centre the table top.

The way I positioned my pine pieces was so there was an overhang of the table each end and two shelves in the middle (great spot for storage of rulers, pattern pieces, etc.)

Total cost: $312.95

The finished height of the table is 90cm, which is the same as our kitchen bench and I find a good working height for cutting out fabric.

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Happy crafting : )

{quilting} Master T's quilt completed

Today I got around to finishing off Master T's quilt. Apologies for the terrible lighting on the photos, it is very dark and stormy here. The focus of this quilt was reds and blues and I used mostly the stars and stripes fabrics by Riley Blake, as well as scraps of fabrics from my stash in reds and linens. Sashing in white and finished with a sand herringbone backing and pale blue stripe/spot binding.

By far the biggest quilt I have made so far, it measures 74 inches x 85 inches (190cm x 220cm). Master T's bed is a king single and there is plenty of overhang both sides as well as extra folded up at the end. I went that extra bit bigger so that it will still fit a double bed for him should he decide to move up to a double bed down the track.

{first fabric collection release} circus love

Introducing my first fabric collection release - Circus Love.

I'm so excited to be heading down the road of designing my own fabric and patterns, its just the start of something fabulous and I am excited to be sharing the very first release with you today!

Circus Love is all about the boys - a mix of aqua and rust with white, basic prints - stripes, chevrons, bunting flags and more - I can see these becoming gorgeous quilts, pillows, and room accessories for little boys as wells as cute summer clothing like shorts and applique t's.

I'm in the process of designing a cot size quilt pattern to go with this first fabric collection release that I hope to have ready very soon. In the meantime, if you really love these new fabrics, you can purchase them through my Spoonflower shop here : )

Stay tuned for more fabric releases down the road - I have so many ideas buzzing around in my head and sketch books full of images and objects I've pick up in my travels - even a simple leaf can be scanned and transformed into a beautiful fabric design . . .

{back again . . .}

Seriously having trouble finding the time to be a mum, work from home, and do all that boring stuff like housework in between! Not to mention finding time to blog! So, here is yet another attempt at getting back to blogging. I have been up to lots! Just no time to sit at the computer and write posts, upload photos, etc....

So what's been happening since my last blog post in January . . . really? that long ago?!

The Cubby House/Fort was finished = 3 very happy and busy little people!

Winter Collection 2012 was released = very busy mama on the sewing machine!

Road-tripping to markets around the country side (here's my stall at the Square Handmade Market in Bendigo in March) = busy mama lucky to have super hubby to stay home with the little people!

New sewing machine = VERY HAPPY SEWING MAMA HERE!!!

Finding more time for quilting = happy sewing mama : )

Finding more time for other sewing projects = again happy sewing mama : )

I'll be attempting to blog more often, so stay tuned for some new projects in the pipeline that I have to share with you, some giveaways I'm a part of that you will have the chance to enter to win something, and the ramblings of this busy sewing mama x

{handmade find} Josephene's Bags

My lovely friend Jo makes the most gorgeous bags, clutches and accessories - but as yet isn't one to blog, facebook, twitter about her brand - so here I am to tell you all about her amazing designs!
Late last year I asked Jo to make my mum one of her beautiful Hobo bags as a present for her 60th birthday. Mum was in desperate need of a new bag and I knew she had been eyeing off Jo's fabulous bags. So I put in the order and Jo hand delivered the bag for mum's birthday. Mum is wrapped, the workmanship is amazing and Jo did a beautiful job.

So go on - head on over to Jo's Website, have a browse and hopefully I can convince Jo to come along to some markets with me this year when I travel so she can show off her fabulous products.

{sewing room} time to clean!

Its that job seems to get put off each week until it becomes unbearable to work in, then I do a half hearted clean up to keep me going, but it alway seems to end up like this;
So, time for a change. I moved tables, created space and now I am happy. With some empty shelves ready for the 65 metres of winter fabrics that are on the way!

{photo a day challenge} Day #4 - letterbox

We don't have a letterbox at our place as we live in a rural area where Australia Post doesn't deliver. But I did find this pretty pink letterbox on pinterest that I thought we look lovely on our front fence - although not quite big enough for the fabric parcels that come my way ; )

{challenge} 12 WIP's in 2012

AJ has set the challenge - can it be done?! 12 Quilting WIP's to be completed in 2012. The rules are 6 projects must be already underway and the other 6 in the pipeline. Well, I definitely have 6 project underway but not quite 6 in the pipeline but I am sure I will add to that list in the coming weeks as I add more projects to my to-do list.

So I pulled out my tubs of WIP's and found 7 quilting projects on the go that I hadn't completed. And yes I do say TUBS of WIP's as I have a few things half done, just started and almost there - and not just quilting projects ; )

The list - 7 projects underway;
1. Cot size girls jelly roll quilt - front pieced, just needs sandwiching, quilting, binding.
2. Cot size boys quilt - blocks need sashing, then sandwiching, quilting, binding.
3. Pram size girls jelly roll quilt - front pieced, just needs sandwiching, quilting, binding.
4. Pram size girls Japanese Patchwork Quilt - just needs sandwiching, quilting, binding.
5. Small Oh Cherry quilt - everything done, binding half on, just needs to be sewn down on the back.
6. & 7. 2 x Quilted nappy change wallets (one boys & one girls) - ready to be sandwiched and quilted.

The list - projects in the pipeline;
8. Red quilt for couch in theatre room - fabrics coming via our Fat Quarter Birthday Swap (so June for me).
9. Quilt for Nate's big boy bed he is moving into around April - pattern chosen, need to add some more fabrics to my stash I already have for this one.
10. Quilt for Tom's big boy bed he is already in - pattern chosen, need more fabrics.
11. Quilt for Couch in Lounge room - already have the fabrics, pattern not yet decided but might just make it a scrappy type quilt.
12. Pram Quilt for friend's new baby boy (who is already two weeks old so need to get cracking on this one!) - pattern chosen, need fabrics.

I'll add photos of the projects shortly when I decide which one to do each month, including which one I am going to tackle first this year (which I think needs to be number 12!).
