My Creative Space

Today I am back to some more quilting. I received an order of fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop in the post today - a layer cake of this new collection by Moda - Botany by Lauren & Jessi Jung. I love the earthy colours of this collection with the hints of pinks. So once I had the two littlest ones down for nap, I got cutting and put together this simple cot size quilt top.

This one I'll hopefully have finished for the next market in a couple of weeks time.

Hushabye Quilts

I opened my "Hushabye" by Tula Pink jelly roll earlier this week and created two cot size (approx. 110x130cm) very quick quilt tops to finish and take to Mathilda's in Adelaide in March. The first I pieced together 24 random strips including all the pink ones from the roll then sliced in half, turned one half around and pieced the two long pieces together. The second one doesn't have any pink in it and I think the colours would be great for a little boy. This I have just left the strips as sewn - I had to add in 8 extra strips to get my 24 strips in total of some coffee coloured quilters cottons I picked up at spotlight. The spotted fabric I am using to back both quilts, not sure about the binding yet.

Apologies for the terrible photos once again - I am in serious need of a new camera, the colours really are much better in real life.

Now I just need to decide how to quilt these. I was first inspired to make these quick quilts like this after seeing the quilt Helen made for Ingrid's new little girl last year.

Completed Quilt for Miss M

Finally its done! This is biggest quilt I have made so far (approx. 60 inch x 76 inch) for Miss M's new "big girl" king single bed. I finished off sewing the binding down tonight after having it sitting staring at me waiting for me to do this for quite a few weeks now. I FMQ'd the entire quilt standing up at my sewing machine as I found it impossible to manovere the weight of the quilt under the machine, especially with a pregnant belly in the way! If I decide to make another quilt this big in the future I think I will send it off to be done by someone with a professional quilting frame, much easier!

Completed backing - 108 6inch squares. The strip up the entire right side is 2.5inch squares of fabric from everyones fabrics used in the swap. 36 2.5inch squares in total

Miss M's new room. I have painted the feature wall, made the quilt, flags and curtains. And I need to order some prints for the walls and it will be finished. And then we just have to convince Miss M that yes she can sleep in here so the new bubba can sleep in her cot . . . she is not keen.

Yesterday's market went well, although could have been a little busier with prehaps a slightly younger crowd, but a good first one for the year.

EB RR Block Swap - Quilt top for Miss M

Just before Christmas I received my 12 blocks as part of the EB Newbie Quilts Round Robin Block Swap. Basically it involved 12 of us making up the same 12 blocks in each other's fabrics. We each used 3 different coloured fabrics with one main background colour for each block - my fabrics used are a fat quarter pack of Anna Griffin's 'Riley' collection, which is now just about all gone. The swap was completed in just under 6 months (blocks are 12 inch square). It is a little confusing to explain the swap, but basically I got back 12 different blocks in my own fabrics.

I am using the blocks to make a new quilt for Miss M's new big girl bed she is getting for her 2nd birthday in less than a couple of weeks time. So today I finished off the quilt top. I decided on plain white sashing and used up the scraps that came back to me to do a border around that. The finished size is approx. 60 inches x 76 inches to go on her King Single bed. I am still working on the backing and then it will need to be sandwiched and FMQ'd - all in my spare time ; )

I was worried there was just a little too much pink in the blocks when I got them back, but now with the white sashing and the border I am pretty happy with how it is looking. I am seaching for some curtain fabric to go with this now and am having lots of problems trying to find something suitable. Definitely not pink - I am thinking a green of some sort similar to the paler green in the fabrics, as I would also like to do a feature wall in green similar to this, maybe a little darker, in Miss M's new room.

EB RR Block Swap - Final Blocks Completed!

I finished off my last 4 blocks for the EB Round Robin Block Swap today. I am looking forward to getting back all my blocks to make a quilt for Miss M's big girl bed.

EB Dolls Quilt Swap - received!

Look what I received in the post last night from Xena! Wow, I have been spoilt! This little quilt is absolutely stunning and the many hours of work that have gone into it can only be appreciated up close. All those little leaves hand embroided! Thankyou so much Xena - it truly is more than I could have asked for and will take pride of place in my new sewing room on the wall.

EB Dolls Quilt Swap - what I made . . .

It was opening day yesterday for the EB Dolls Quilt Swap for 2009. Here are some more photos of the quilt I completed as part of the swap. I made for Tania, and you can see some pics of the quilt on her blog with one of her girls who is very happy with the little quilt. The two pink fabrics I used were from Lila Tueller's Santorini collection and the rest of the fabrics are from Sanae's Panache collection. The little birdies tails are made using pale pink bridal tulle. I free motion quilted the quilt in two different coloured pink threads, pale pink for the centre piece and a darker brighter pink around the border where the birdies are.

I am yet to receive my quilt, but am looking forward to it and am in no rush as we are away on holiday's still so hope to come home to a lovely package. You can check out some more of the beautiful quilts made in the EB Quilters Flickr group.

Blogtoberfest Day #24 ~ Another for the ready to bind pile

This is the little cot size quilt from earlier in the week that I was putting together made with jelly roll strips. I FMQ'd this one yesterday and now it is in the ready to bind pile.

Blogtoberfest Day #22 ~ A quilt in a day

Here is a quilt I started and finished yesterday for my friends little baby boy that was born on Monday night. When I put the kids to bed at lunchtime I cut out some random sized strips of fabric, put them together to form two quilt tops (this is a double sided quilt) of about cot quilt size, pressed, sandwiched and began the quilting. My very first attempt at quilting straight lines - I usually just FMQ all my quilts. My straight lines started off well in the middle but as I got to the edges it was obvious i hadn't squared up my fabrics so the lines are a little wonky there but oh well, its handmade with love : )

I finshed off the quilting between hubby getting home and the kids going to bed and then sat down in front of the tv to handstitch the binding down after dinner. It just needs a label before giving to little baby Jaxon.

Blogtoberfest Day #20 ~ Inspiration for a new quilt

I was recently blog surfing and came across a beautiful quilt Ingrid of Lottielulu recently received for her new baby Kitty.

So I found half a jellyroll from the 'Sweet' by Urban Chicks collection in my stash and with a few extra strips of fabric from the same collection added in to get the length I wanted I am going to make one too (the strips in the photo are folded in half). The finished quilt will measure approx 110cm x 120cm so a good size for a cot quilt. I'm hoping I can get this top put together tonight when the little ones go to bed, and then find some suitable backing fabric when I go into town later in the week.

Sorry for my terrible photography - we are in need of a new camera, maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas . . . pretty pretty please : )

Ready Set Show!

Just a quick post - LOTS of photos - of a peak at just some of the goodies I will have on offer this weekend at the 2 day Wentworth Ag Show. I am looking forward to taking all my tables and displays out this afternoon to set up and out there very early tomorrow morning to set up everything else. Lovely weather here today - just hoping the rain stays away for the weekend - this show is known for having it rain every year!
